Barges by Country and Region: Alsace &
Lorraine
|
The
bucolic landscape of the Lorraine region, with its rolling
hills and miles of navigable rivers and waterways, will keep
your interest at its peak. Nancy, the cultural center of
Lorraine, has a spectacular city center which contains some of
the most splendid 18th century architecture outside Paris. In
Alsace, Strasbourg's city center features a breathtaking pink
sandstone cathedral and the charming medieval riverside
quarter called Petite France.
Along the way, you'll
experience the famous Arzviller barge lift, known as the
"bathtub lock" as it carries your vessel up the mountainside,
bypassing 17 locks in the process. You can also visit the
captivating fairytale town of Colmar, birthplace of Bartholdi,
sculptor of the Statue of Liberty.
What would a visit
to these regions be without sampling some of the most famous
of the delicacies from the area including choucroute,
sauerkraut, and of course, quiche Lorraine. Don't miss a
degustation, or wine tasting, at Riquewihr, the epitome of an
Alsatian wine village.
