Barges by Country and Region: Canal du Midi |
With an
ancient past and sun-blessed climate, the South of France is a
destination all its own. The gem of the region is the 300 year
old Canal du Midi. An engineering marvel for its time, the
canal stretches out along the sunny shores of the
Mediterranean before winding inland through ancient villages
and Roman fortifications.
The journey along the Canal
du Midi will take you into Beziers and through the impressive
River Orb aqueduct. Perhaps the most impressive site on the
canal is the 100 foot long flight of seven locks at
Fonserannes. If that isn't enough,
you'll also marvel at
the Malpas Tunnel, the world's oldest canal tunnel.
Of
course, you'll explore many villages on the canal, including
Beziers itself, l'Oppidum d'Enserune, a pre-Roman hilltop
settlement dating from 600 BC, and exciting Carcassonne, the
largest fortified city in existence today. Finally, there are
plenty of vineyards to visit for a degustation, and you'll
also love the Oulibo Olive Corporation where you can taste
delicious olives and olive oil.
