Overview
Luciole
is owned by barging "pioneer" John and Penny Liley who
have created a warm, welcoming atmosphere on the
Luciole, where a feeling of calm and attention to detail
are apparent as soon as one steps on board. The ratio of
crew to guests is high, and all crew members are
British, or English-speaking. The atmosphere is that of
spending a week among friends, informal but attentive,
with the master chef preparing delicious gourmet lunches
and dinners daily.
The
Luciole offers large picture windows in the salon and
dining area, allowing excellent views of the waterways
at all times. Luciole cruises on the exceptionally
scenic Canal du Nivernais. The size and the shape of the
Luciole allow her to explore the upper, less traveled
sections of the canal, with plenty of opportunity to
bike and walk along the canals and in the villages.

Accommodations
Accommodations aboard Luciole have been carefully
planned to provide six double or twin-bedded cabins plus
two single cabins. This comfortable vessel was recently
renovated: new bathrooms in some of the cabins, a
cheerful color scheme and updated furnishings
throughout.
Three double-bedded cabins are
available, each of which can be converted into twins,
together with three further twin-bedded and two single
cabins on board. Each has its own private shower and
toilet facilities. Individually-controlled
air-conditioning is installed throughout. |

Sample Itinerary
Canal du Nivernais Sunday - The
rendezvous in Paris at the Hotel Mansart with the
Luciole representative is at 2:30 pm, followed by the
journey to Auxerre in the barge's private bus. There the
Luciole herself is moored on the impressive river
frontage of the city, overlooked by the Cathedral of
Saint Etienne. A champagne reception welcomes guests on
board.
Monday - A cruise upriver leads
you into beautiful pastoral countryside intermingled
with sweeping reaches of the River Yonne. Hand-wound
locks lie along the route, providing opportunities to
step ashore. After lunch you moor in Bailly, home to
Burgundy's Crement sparkling wine. An afternoon visit is
made to Chablis, then on to the picturesque villages of
St Bris and Irancy, also well known for their wine
production.
Tuesday - The morning's
cruise along the Nivernais takes you up an attractive
arm of the canal and on to the River Cure at the small
town of Vermenton. In the afternoon you'll return for a
tour to historic Auxerre and its old shopping centre,
taking time to enjoy French 'provincial life' in this
beautiful village.
Wednesday - From
Vermenton, you'll make the short journey to delightful
Noyers-sur-Serein. With its friendly market stalls, half
timbered houses and turreted ramparts it is easy to see
why Noyers is considered one of the most beautiful
villages in France. After lunch the barge Luciole
continues southwards to a night-time mooring at
Mailly-la-Ville.
Thursday - A morning
drive takes your group to Vezelay, where the spectacular
12th Century Basilica dominates the town. Here St
Bernard preached the 2nd Crusade. You'll enjoy its
numerous shops and cafes. In the afternoon Luciole
cruises through a region where the dramatic cliffs of Le
Saussois stand by the waterside, to an evening mooring
at Chatel-Censoir.
Friday - A morning
voyage takes you to the delightful medieval town of
Clamecy with its narrow streets and staircases, a worthy
venue for the climax of your cruise. Your final visit is
to the imposing chateau of Bazoches. Set on a hill
amidst splendid rolling countryside, this was the 17th
Century home of the Marquis de Vauban, France's great
military engineer. Upon return to Luciole, you'll enjoy
the Captain's gala farewell dinner.
Saturday - An after-breakfast departure
for Paris anticipates arrival at the Place Vendome in
the early afternoon, around 1:00 PM. For guests wishing
to travel elsewhere in France, by train or by hire car,
a stop can always be made in Auxerre again on the
journey up to Paris.
